A few ascetics were discussing that desire was the breeder of evil and worst enemy of man. Suddenly, there appeared before them an angelic form of luster and grace, announcing herself as the power of desire personified. She asked: “Am I your enemy? If I had not been in your hearts would you have taken yourselves to penance and meditations for the sake of God–vision ? I am the power inherent in your Tapasya.” So saying she disappeared. The truth at once dawned on the minds of the ascetics that desire by itself was not the enemy but it was man’s ignorance which directed the desire towards the field of the delusive sense-world that hurled him to the bondage of samsara.
